Call for Papers

Lori Gruen, who attended graduate school with Mylan and me at the University of Arizona, asked me to publicize a special issue of Hypatia devoted to “animal others.” Lori is one of the guest editors.

Skipper is skipping through life now!

Skipper is an older sheltie mix who was left in a crate on the driveway at Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue with a note attached: “Daddy wants to shoot Skipper because his teeth are falling out.”? Well, 8 year old Skipper’s luck has turned around. When he came into Pet Haven’s foster program he went straight to the vet and had his teeth taken care of … then he got to hang out at one of our doggie daycare partners, Auntie Ruth, for the weekend in the convalescence room where he had a chance to recover from his surgery. He was definitely pampered there … until he moved to a foster home. Skipper is being fostered by Pet Haven’s Fall Benefit coordinator … so on Sunday when we met for our committee meeting, guess who got to come along??? Yes, Skipper told his foster there’s no way he’s skipping a chance to be the center of attention and to help in the planning of Pet Haven’s Fall Benefit.

As you can see from the photo on the right, he was an active contributor to our meeting, and we very much appreciated it!

Skipper’s full story with lots of great photos are posted on the Red Lake Rosie’s blog. Click here to check it out!

If you’re interested in learning more about Skipper, email pethavendogs@yahoo.com and check out his bio.

Abstention

Some people abstain from meat for religious rather than moral reasons. See here.

So cute "Solo"

Solo
8×10 original Oil on canvas
This is one of two first contributions Kate Merriman is making to the Project. The lucky recipient of this gorgeous painting is the Austin Humane Society.
Please visit her blog to see her other paintings and to get a sneak peek at the second contribution I will be posting later on. Visit her here. Thank you so much Kate! This is an awesome addition to the project!

Keira

Keira. By Liz Pearson, of Cape Town, South Africa, for DARG

Liz Pearson of Cape Town, South Africa, has made this remarkable oil painting of Keira, a 4-year-old pit bull cross. Look at the stance and the muscle and the pride in this dog! And yet, Liz has showed Keira’s sweet expression and intelligence, too. Liz really has the touch. Check out her blog to see more. And to read more about DARG, the Domestic Animal Rescue Group, click here.

As for Keira’s pursuits, “apparently,” Liz writes, “her best activity is to watch TV on the couch over some biscuits! She’s love-starved and a real softie.”

Pit bulls have a reputation, that’s true. But Liz believes – and I do, too – that there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. Keira is a sweetie, and with the right family, would be a wonderful pet.

Duke

Duke. By Carol Lavoie, as a donation to Protectors of Animals in East Hartford, Conn.

Here’s another painting on the abstract edge, by Carol Lavoie. To my eye, Duke looks proud and timid and sweet, all at the same time. I like the colors Carol has used, the lavender and blue, along with the real doggy colors. A lovely painting!

Adopted Dog Update: Tango

Tango is a terrier who was adopted by his fosters a couple of years ago:

Attached are a few pictures of Tango as requested. We hadn’t taken any pictures of him for a while so these were taken just tonight. He loves to run after our daily walk to release his pent up energy.
Today is National Dog Day (apparently even dogs get “Hallmark holidays” now :) ). In any case, it’s a great excuse to make the daily walk a little longer and throw in a few extra belly rubs. Love your puppies!
